Sometimes we catch ourselves and notice we don’t need to be out front, in the spotlight, noticed. In fact, being a hidden presence enables others to shine.

A popular Marist Book called A Certain Way offers some thoughtful ideas on the Marist Way of looking at and living life.

HIDDEN AND UNKNOWN

Happy being Hidden.

Colin loved the phrase “hidden and unknown,” but he never meant it as a retreat from the world. He used it precisely when urging Marists to “go everywhere” and “do all the good we can.” To be hidden is to clear a space so that God can work through us, and so that other people — not ourselves — become the focus. Mayet captured the balance sharply: hidden, yes; dead, no. The hidden life is the soil for great deeds, never an excuse to avoid them. Perhaps it is best summed up this way: be present wherever you are, let the love of God and Mary flow through you, and do not get in the way.

• When do I seek to be noticed, and could that energy instead go into the person in front of me?

• Do one good thing today that no one will know you did, and let it stay unseen.
